What sleep training method do you use?
Unlike other branded, sleep-training theories, systems or solutions you may have come across, the Mommywise Method includes lots of common sense, emotional and logistical support. Your baby is unique. There is no cookie-cutter “solution” that’s going to make her into a great sleeper. Books are great in theory, but they don’t know your baby, or help you make decisions in the middle of the night. They don’t help you understand if your baby needs something, or if she’s just waking out of habit. If we work together, we are WITH you, in your home, holding your hands before, during and after your baby is sleep trained, so you’re not freaking out or worried that you’re doing something wrong. What is your position on Cry-it-Out sleep training methods?
We know you don’t want to hear your baby cry, no parent does! But here’s the thing: If you want to empower your baby to learn to sleep independently without excessive crying, there is no way to do this without a few tears in the beginning. We will discuss this at length, and together we’ll co-create a plan that will minimize the tears, make sleep training smooth and seamless for your baby, and lead you to sustainable success.
What’s the best age to sleep train my baby?
Sleep training is honestly easier for everyone before teething and big developmental leaps begin. In a perfect world, you would begin sleep training between 10-16 weeks, but if you’ve missed that window, no worries! We help families with babies up to 14 months successfully sleep train their babies all the time.
How do I know if my baby is ready?
If you ask 10 pediatricians, you might get 10 different answers. Tribeca Pediatrics (the largest practice in NYC) strongly recommends sleep training and night weaning between 8-12 weeks. Other pediatricians are somewhat vague, or recommend anywhere between 3-5 months. Our opinion? Your baby is ready for sleep training when YOU’RE ready, when all caregivers all are aligned, AND you’re ready to reduce to one night feed. Your baby should also be healthy, and not in acute teething pain when you begin sleep training.
Can you help me teach my baby to sleep?
In order to know if working together is a good fit, we’ll need to speak on the phone. We will ask you lots of questions and we will tell you IF we’re 100% confident that we can help you. If you and your partner are misaligned; if one of you is opposed to any crying at all, if your baby has any clinical issues, unfortunately, we won’t be able to help. How long will it take to sleep train my baby?
If your baby is healthy and we’re with you in your home, your baby will be sleep trained within 48 hours. Yes, it sounds totally impossible, but we do it all the time! We used to stay with families for 3 nights, but quickly learned that there was no need for anyone to pay us to stay for the 3rd night, because everyone was already sleeping through the night by then. That said, however, we do have a 72-hour offering if you feel like you might need a little more reassurance and support.
How do I know if you can really help me?
We will talk on the phone to be 100% sure that it’s a good fit. We will ONLY accept you as a client if we’re 100% confident that we can help you. If we tell you that we’re 100% confident, you can expect a 100% success rate. Even though sleep training with us only takes a couple of nights, we include 4 weeks of unlimited support after your baby is sleep trained to ensure that you overcome any obstacles, and achieve sustainable success for years to come.
What if it doesn’t work?
If you’ve already tried sleep training with various books, and failed repeatedly, you’re probably feeling defeated and terrified that nothing will ever work. That is a totally normal fear – we hear it all the time! If we work with you, we’ll look carefully at what didn’t work, and change the strategy to lead you to success. Sometimes we have to tweak our strategy a little to make it work for your baby, but we will NOT. LET. YOU. FAIL. (Pinky promise.) Yes, there will be setbacks, but that’s a good thing because we’ll coach you through whatever comes up, so you can confidently overcome ANY setbacks in the future. Bottom line: If we tell you it will work, it will. Guaranteed. We have a 100% success rate, and we don’t do failure!
Can you help us move a toddler and a baby into the same room?
Absolutely! We do this all the time and it’s really fun to see how much can change in a couple of days. Here’s a true story about one family we helped sleep training and night weaning a baby in the same room with a toddler!
We have twins who share a room. Can you help us sleep train them?
Yes, both Erika and Devon are twins experts, and would be thrilled to help you! Erika is a mother of twins herself, so she totally gets it.
Do you work with families out of NYC?
YES! Beyond NYC, we work with families in Westchester, Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey. If you live outside of the Tristate area, we can travel to you – you would just pay for travel expenses.
Do you recommend any sleep training books?
No, we don’t! Honestly, all of the sleep training books contradict one another, and often lead families to WAY too much crying, and repeated failure. Why? Because it’s impossible to be consistent if you’ve got so much contradictory noise in your head! Feel free to read all the books you want, but we can pretty much guarantee that you will be more confused than when you started!
Is there really a 4-month sleep regression?
In our opinion, this is simply a developmental stage when babies shift from newborns to more wakeful babies who are aware of their surroundings. Nearly every family who contacts us says that their baby was sleeping really well between 2-3 months old (sometimes in 6-8 hours stretches), but then it all fell apart between 3-4 months. This is normal and really common, because as your baby grows, she becomes more alert, and has a harder time dozing in and out of sleep like a newborn.
We travel a lot. Can you even help us?
Yes! Your sleep coach will set you up for success by sleep training your baby during a period when you’ll be at home, and then give you all the tools you need to make traveling a breeze from then on. If you’re traveling during the month you’re working with us, your sleep coach will coach you through your travels, so that your baby will continue to be a great sleeper, regardless of where she or he sleeps!
We have two homes. Will sleep training work for us?
Yes! Many of the families we work with have two homes (or parents on Long Island), and travel on weekends – especially during the summer. You do NOT have to wait until fall to sleep train your baby! After your sleep coach helps you sleep train your baby in your primary home, there will be absolutely no problem transitioning from one home to another. We do it all the time!
Can you help me sleep train my toddler?
Yes! The technique is much different (it’s NOT about putting a gate on the door!), but we have great success helping toddlers learn to love sleeping in their “big kid” beds.
How old are the babies you normally work with?
We help families sleep train babies starting starting as early as 10 weeks old. The majority of the babies we work with are between 3-15 months old. And we work with toddlers up until 3.5 years old.
Do you offer phone consultations?
No, we only offer comprehensive in-home sleep training support because we know from experience that anything less doesn’t often work. In order to guarantee your success, we believe that it’s crucial to be with you in your home, really get to know you and your baby, and to coach you in real time throughout the entire sleep training process.
